Primer on OCTRA Horse Numbers

Why does OCTRA have horse numbers?

Every horse with an OCTRA Horse Number has its OCTRA competition record maintained in the OCTRA database. Horses without a Horse Number do not. The Horse Number is used to calculate year end points and accumulated distance. The number prevents confusion between similarly named horses and between registered and barn names. These numbers are for the lifetime of the horse, even if there is a change of rider or ownership.

How do I get a number for my horse?

There are three ways:

  1. Join the Distance Reward/Lifetime Program Awards.
The preferred method! Here is the form. The one-time $20 registration fee is waived for your first horse but is required for each additional horse. Send registrations (by mail or attachment) to Elaine Steele, the Distance Reward Program Chair. Send fees via PayPal (form here) or by check to the Treasurer. If the horse does not yet have a number, it will get one. The Distance Reward/Lifetime Program Awards is fully documented in Section 11.2 of the OCTRA Rule Book.
  2. Enroll in the Breed Awards.
Send a copy of your horses’ registration papers, or Standardbred Canada, TrackIT or USTA Pathway printout to Elaine Steele, the Distance Reward Program Chair. Documentation must be submitted by either the owner OR the rider. If the horse does not yet have a number, it will get one. Breed Awards are fully documented in Section 10.2 of the OCTRA rule Book.
  3. Email a request to the OCTRA Webmaster.
There are many other awards enabled by the Horse Number as well as distance accumulation. NOTE: This basic method DOES NOT register your horse for Distance Rewards nor Breed Awards. If you use a email client like Outlook, Thunderbird, etc., click here for a simple pre-populated email form.
Include the following information in your request:
Your Name, Your OCTRA ID, Owner Name (if not you), Owner OCTRA ID, Horse Name, Horse Breed, Horse Foaling Year, and a list of OCTRA rides already completed this year with Ride Date, Ride Name, Ride Type, and Distance. If you use an email client like Outlook, Thunderbird, etc., click here for a simple pre-populated email form.

There is a searchable list on the website here. Just enter your name or your horse’s name in the search box.

  • Julie Phair,
  • Marc Downing,
  • Rick Tenhove,
  • Kristen Russell,
  • Earle Baxter, and
  • Kristen Howard.

Clarification Regarding Novice Awards and Limited Distance rides

Because the Rule Book is silent on novice participation in LD’s, in 2018 novice riders may compete in more than one Limited Distance ride without fear of losing their novice status. However all Limited Distance rides completed will count toward the maximum 400 kilometer distance allowed for novice status. Novices will earn points for completions in LD’s as well as for LD Best Condition and they will be included in LD rankings. LD ride points, however, will not count toward High Point Novice Rider nor toward High Point Novice Rider/Horse Team.

For the purpose of the novice awards noted above, qualifications for rider or horse are:

  1. Lifetime distance of 400 kilometers or less; and
  2. No more than one completion in an Endurance and/or Open CTR ride.

NOTE: CTR Novice Division qualifications are more detailed and are found in section 5C.6 of the Rule Book.

Novices should consider their best strategy if working toward either novice level award since LD completions will rapidly add distance to their 400 kilometer eligibility possibly limiting the total novice points they can earn in the current season.

If you require further clarification contact either Julie Phair, Awards Committee Chair, or David Morgan, Year End Points Committee Chair.

All Breed Awards are opt-in! It’s up to you!

Members are reminded that it is the owner’s or rider’s responsibility to request that a horse be included in the pertinent Breed Award category. This includes “Best of the Rest”!

OCTRA Rule Book 10.2.1
b) To be eligible for breed awards, a copy of the horses’ registration papers, or Standardbred Canada, TrackIT or USTA Pathway printout, must be submitted by the owner OR the rider, to the Distance Reward Program Chair.

Elaine Steele (lostcreekfarm@sympatico.ca 613-267-2590) is the Distance Reward Program Chair. ALL breed awards are opt-in. If you do not register your horse with Elaine, your horse will not be in the running for this award.

NOTE: The requirement to opt-in your horse includes High Point “Best of the Rest“. Even though many of these horses do not have breed registration documents you must still request they be included for this award. You can check if your horse is on the Best of the Rest list by going to this page…
